Nyagatare residents have given 34 tonnes of beans to over 7000 families in Ngoma District.

The seeds will benefit families in the sectors of Remera, Rurenge, Mugesera and Rukumberi that experienced  poor harvests due to limited rainfall last year.

While handing over the bean seeds to the beneficiaries, at Remera Sector in Ngoma District, Nyagatare deputy mayor in charge of economic development Didas Kayitare said it was an initiative by the residents after realising that some of their compatriots in Ngoma had not harvested as they did.

“In Nyagatare, we had a bumper harvest last year. Our residents felt obliged to help those who never harvested such that the affected families can have what to plant this season,” Kayitare said.

“I am just a messenger for residents who sent me to present their modest contribution to you. We are optimistic you will get some good yields in the end as we did,” he added.

The Mayor of Ngoma District, Aphrodis Nambaje, thanked Nyagatare residents for the good gesture.

“When you go back to Nyagatare, tell them that what they have done is a challenge to all of us Rwandans, they have challenged us to exhibit the spirit of patriotism and love for each other,”

He added that residents would be mobilised to start planting immediately.

This is not the first time citizens have contributed to help fellow countrymen. Recently, Rwamagana and Gatsibo districts donated bean seeds to one sector of Kayonza District and three sectors of Kirehe District, respectively.

Last year when some sectors of Rwimiyaga and Karangazi in Nyagatare District were hit by drought, Ngoma residents donated some seeds and rations to the Nyagatare residents.
