LOCAL traders have been advised to get prepared to grab great opportunity as negotiations for Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) agreement between COMESA, SADC and EAC are on top gear. The TFTA is Africa’s largest free-trade zone, covering 26 countries in an area from Cape Town to Cairo. It comprises of three largest regional economic communities (RECs) in Africa namely the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Prof Adolf Mkenda, made the revelation in Dar es Salaam yesterday, saying the agreement would increase the scope of market.
“Tanzanians will be able to sell their products from Cape Town (South Africa) to Cairo (Egypt),” said the PS shortly after opening the second Research Week of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). Prof Mkenda, who represented the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Charles Mwijage, said the government has created conducive environment for investment noting that it has streamlined the procedures to register a company.
“One can now register a company online of BREALA (Business Registration and Licensing Agency) portal thus to curb bureaucracy,” he said. Prof Mkenda pointed out that the government has finalised the exercise to review contracts of privatised industries to establish owners who violated terms and regulations of the agreement to take back the defunct industries.
The UDSM Vice Chancellor, Prof Rwekaza Mukandala, said the Research Week is organised at two levels namely the College/School/Institute level, saying the annual event is used to showcase scholarly research activities of its researchers (staff members and students). “We started to implement the Research Week programme in 2015. The event is also an avenue to promote the University’s Research Agenda,” said the UDSM Vice Chancellor.
As for 55th Anniversary of the UDSM, Prof Mukandala, said the university has for the past 55 years given birth to several universities including the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and Ardhi University (ARU).
“Despite losing these important constituents, the university has been able to restore its lost grounds,” he said. Prof Mukandala pointed out that the university has made a significant contribution to the nation through training of high level human resources at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
