One of the world’s largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles, Daimler AG, says it is exploring the market for farming mechanisation in Malawi and other southern African countries to contribute to efforts to develop agricultural as a key economic driver in those countries.
South Africa-based Daimler’s Head of Fuso Trucks and Buses Southern Africa, Naeem Hassim, said in Hannover, Germany on Wednesday, that the company plans to start supplying tractors and other farming equipment vehicles to Malawi and other countries in partnership with Mitsubishi.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the International Automobile Exhibition (IAA) Commercial Vehicles taking place in Hannover.
“As Daimler, we are not too much into agricultural vehicles but our partner Mitsubishi manufactures tractors and other farming machinery and we are talking to them so that together we can explore the market in Malawi,” said Hassim.
He said the company is aware that affordability as well as availability and back-up services are key to the successful supply of farm equipment in Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique where the company has dealerships through its newly launched Daimler Regional Centre based in Pretoria, South Africa.
Daimler’s official dealer in Malawi is Stansfield Motors.
Ahead of the IAA Commercial Vehicle’s, Daimler’s legendary Mercedes Benz Unimog truck was named “the best working vehicle for farmers” after it successfully completed the 2016 PowerMix test of the German Agricultural Association.
