Prices of some foodstuff and other commodities have continued to rise in most markets in Kigali, a mini-survey by The New Times indicates.
The price of fresh peas has risen by Rwf400 to Rwf1,700 a kilogramme in Kimironko Market, up from Rwf1,300 last week, while that of fresh beans increased from Rwf500 to Rwf550 per kilo. Irish potatoes now go for Rwf380 compared to Rwf320 previously.
A kilogramme of passion fruits now costs Rwf1,400 in most city markets, up from Rwf1,200, while that of mangoes is up by Rwf300 at Rwf1,600 from Rwf1,300, and oranges go for Rwf1,500 a kilogramme in Nyarugenge market, an increase from Rwf1,300 previously.
Alice Mukarwego, a trader in Kimironko Market, was optimistic that the prices for different commodities and foodstuffs would reduce following the start of the rain season.
Meanwhile, prices of other foodstuffs, and some commodities were unchanged. Cassava tubers are at Rwf200 per kilo and maize flour costs Rwf600 a kilogramme, while that of beef is at Rwf2,400 in Nyabugogo Market.
The price of onions is also stable at Rwf1,100 per kilogramme, carrots cost between Rwf500 to Rwf700 per kilo, and cabbages go for Rwf500, while pumpkins are between Rwf350 and Rwf500.
Paw paws are at Rwf400 each, watermelons cost between Rwf2,300 and Rwf2,800 each in Batsinda Market, depending on size.
A bar of soap ranges from Rwf400 to Rwf600, depending on location or whether one buys from a neighbourhood shop or supermarket, and a five-litre jerrycan of vegetable cooking oil is at Rwf6,200. Bread (weighing 1kg) ranges from Rwf900 to Rwf2,000, depending on the brand, type or size, and whether one buys from a supermarkety or ordinary shop. Sugar ranges from Rwf700 to Rwf850, milk is between Rwf400 and Rwf500 per litre in Kigali City and suburbs.
