Bumper maize harvest improves incomes of farmers

FARMERS in Rukwa region have used their 1,260,967-ton bumper harvest during the 2015/16 farming season to improve household incomes.This was revealed yesterday by the Rukwa Regional Commissioner Zelothe Steven when briefing the visiting Governor of Ngazija Island in Republic of Comoro, Hassani Hamadi, who was accompanied by a team of businesspersons during their one-day visit in the region.

Rukwa Region has 1,154,760 people who require 249,428.16 tons of maize (the staple food) per annum and 57, 738 tons of legumes respectively. “That means farmers in region have realised a surplus of 814,489 tons which were sold to various centres,” he said.

About 80 per cent of the population in the region engages in agriculture, the mainstay of the national economy. On his part, the Ngazija Governor said Comoro is keen to work hand in hand with Rukwa region in improving agriculture.
