Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) has released 10 new wheat varieties that are bakers’ choice on both national and international markets. The new varieties, released on January 25, 2017 in Burera District, have been developed by researchers working in the RAB Northern zone.

During an exhibition function officiated by the Minister of State in charge of Agriculture Fulgence Nsengiyumva, at Rwerere Station in Burera District, the researchers confirmed the adaptability of the varieties to the whole country’s Agro-ecology.

Dr Patrick Karangwa, the Head of Research Department in RAB, said that they have tried all the new varieties in five districts of Northern Province, and Nyamagabe District of Southern Province and found them highly yielding.

Prosper Ziganimbuga, the owner of Gitare Mills Ltd operating in Gasarenda Sector, Nyamagabe District that produces a famous bread branded as “GITARE BREAD,” praised the new wheat varieties for their excellent quality; noting that the varieties are “bakers’ choice.”

According to Minister of State Nsengiyumva, research-based agriculture is very important to improve the agricultural production.

The minister of State said: “I encourage farmers to adopt these varieties as they are based on research, but I also challenge researchers to keep releasing more to develop Rwanda’s agriculture sector.”

Most of the wheat used by several wheat milling factories in Rwanda are imported; which presents business opportunities for any investors who may venture into Rwanda’s wheat industry.
