Tharaka Nithi county government has partnered with Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP) to ensure a hunger free county with sustainable economic growth.
Speaking at the Deputy Commissioner’s ground in Chuka while KCSAP handed over nine motor bikes and hundred tablets to the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries in the county, Tharaka Nithi Governor, Muthomi Njuki said that they would continue to support farmers by upscaling climate smart agricultural practices.
“The Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture (KCSAP) implementation programme through the docket of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries will support farmers to ensure we eradicate hunger in various parts of the county,” he said.
The governor explained that the tablets were set to boost the digitization of agriculture records, including farmers’ details, collection and relaying of any relevant data.
He added that the motorbikes would enhance the mobility of agricultural officers across the county.
The governor revealed that the project aimed at increasing agricultural productivity for smallholder crop and livestock farmers as well as aid in climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.
Njuki disclosed that they were working on a project that would help educate farmers on the best farming methods.
He noted that Tharaka Nithi has a good climate that has greatly increased agricultural produce in the region thereby reducing hunger.
“Tharaka Nithi County has not been listed as a hunger-prone county in 2021. This is as a result of the county’s investment in projects such as donation of certified seeds and availing Artificial Insemination (AI) services to farmers,” said Njuki
While encouraging the department to manage funds appropriately, the governor emphasized on the need to continue investing in the agriculture sector.
He added that there was the need to boost beef farming in the area to align with the flourishing poultry and dairy farming.
The County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Njue Njagi said they were in the race to eradicate hunger and food shortage through several projects with KCSAP.
