Nandi women trained on climate smart agriculture

Lilo Pure Foods Limited in collaboration with Maendeleo ya Wanawake has trained over 100 women and youths drawn from Tinderet, Aldai and Nandi Hills sub-counties on Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA).   

CSA is an approach that aims at improving and increasing food productivity, ensuring food security as well as countering climate change in a bid to equip women, youths and farmers with knowledge on appropriate methods of farming that can enhance food production.

Speaking during a one-day training held at Nandi Hills town, agriculture expert Charles Mugambi said for the modern farmers to counter climate change they should incorporate smart agriculture that include diversification in their farming, soil conservation as well as coming up with various ways of generating income.

Mugambi noted that when it comes to farming women are disadvantaged, the more reason why they decided to train them on how to practice proper farming to enable them be at par with their male counterparts.

“For farmers to be able to maneuver in agriculture during this time that we are experiencing global climate change, you have to carry out various ways of soil conservation and diversify farming by practicing mixed farming,” he explained.

He further advised farmers to play a role in conserving the environment through agro-forestry in their farms.

Nandi County Maendeleo ya Wanawake chair, Sarah Kosgei said the one-day training has equipped women, youth and farmers who managed to attend with skills that will boost their farming and therefore enable them attain high and quality yields.

Kosgei urged the women to be ambassadors to other women in Nandi in sharing the skills they acquired from the training, adding that quality farming is key to quality food thus leads to good health.

“Agriculture is like a pillar to every mankind. To put quality food on the table we need to exercise smart agriculture. Now that you have acquired the skills implement them to take part in dealing with global climate change,” she said.

Zipporah Cherotich, a resident of Nandi Hills lauded the initiative saying this will improve the quality of food they consume and even deal with the cases of malnutrition through the knowledge gained from Lilo Pure Foods Limited.
