Zambia: Benchmark maize price raised to deter smuggling

Posted on June, 2, 2023 at 09:18 am

In an attempt to ward off soaring corn demand from countries in southern and East Africa, the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has raised by 51% its purchase price for maize, a key benchmark price for grain trading as Zambia pushes to ensure food security amidst regional deficit.

Surging maize prices in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Tanzania, and South Sudan have created a lucrative trade for people to smuggle staple food out of Zambia.
