Dar es Salaam. Tanzania's rapidly maturing food systems offers many untapped potentials for investors around the world, the country’s manager for the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (Agra), Mr Vianey Rweyendela, has said.
His assertion comes ahead of a four-day Africa's Food Systems Summit 2023 (AGRF 2023 Summit) which is scheduled to start on September 5, 2023.
"Tanzania is a veritable treasure trove of untapped opportunities for both domestic and international investors in the agricultural sector," he said yesterday.
Endorsed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the AGRF 2023 Summit aims to shape the future of Africa's food systems.
Themed "Recover, Regenerate, Act: Africa’s Solutions to Food Systems Transformation," the event represents commitment to rejuvenate and fortify the continent's food systems.
Tanzania's ambitious plans for its food systems focus on preservation and creating an equitable, prosperous, and sustainable future. The government, private sector, and civil society are collaborating to position the country as a key food provider for Africa and beyond.
"Our nation boasts diverse value chains that span a vast geographical expanse, makes Tanzania a veritable treasure trove of untapped opportunities for domestic and international investors," Rweyendela said.
One of the country's significant strategies is to boost grain reserves and establish a strategic production of over 12 million metric tonnes. Such reserves have proven crucial in stabilizing market prices and reinforcing food security on national and regional levels.
With seven agro-ecological zones, Tanzania offers a plethora of opportunities for agribusiness that span from farming and processing to packaging and exporting, the country presents investors with a broad spectrum of possibilities, Mr Rweyendela said.
Tanzania also has a coastline of over 1,400 kiloemters which offers massive opportunities for the blue economy.
As part of the comprehensive plan for agro-industrialisation, Tanzania has launched several initiatives, including the Agricultural Sector Development Program Phase II (ASDP II) and the Tanzania Agro-industries Development Flagship (TAIDF), which represent critical steps towards Tanzania's agricultural transformation.
On May 12, 2023, the Minister for Agriculture, Hussein Bashe, inaugurated the registration process for Africa's Food Systems Forum 2023 Summit (AGRF-2023) in Dodoma, inviting agricultural stakeholders worldwide to register and participate.
The minister is on the record-extending a global invitation to investors, urging them to consider investing in Tanzania's agricultural sector. He emphasizes that the current government is enthusiastic about collaborating with investors and providing comprehensive support.
