President William Ruto has revealed that the Ukrainian government will set up a grain hub at the Port of Mombasa to address food shortage in East Africa.

He made the revelation after holding talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York City on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly - UNGA 2023.

"In New York, United States held talks with Ukraine President Zelensky who committed to establishing a grain hub in the Port of Mombasa to address food shortage in East Africa," Ruto said via a statement on his X handle Tuesday evening.

Ukraine is one of the world's biggest producers of grain such as sunflower oil, barley, maize and wheat.

Following the February 2022 invasion by Russia, the enemy navy blockaded Ukraine's Black Sea ports, trapping 20 million tonnes of grain which were meant for export.

Ruto said Kenya advocates for a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict to restore stability, alleviate the suffering of the people and stop the destruction of property.

"We believe the resolution of the conflict is a priority for the world and essential to advancing the shared prosperity of all humanity," he said.

The President also held talks with the President of the World Bank Ajay Banga on the sidelines of the UNGA 2023.

Meanwhile, Kenya has been scheduled to address the international community during the morning session of the summit on Thursday, September 21, on measures it's taking to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Ruto is expected to continue pushing for a fair global climate financial system that is favourable to both the rich and poor economies.
