One of the iconic parts of the Minot skyline is inching closer to a makeover.

The Minot Farmers Union grain silos are some of the most visible structures along First Avenue Northeast where there’s a fair amount of traffic.

The Union Silos Public Art Project team has reached nearly three-quarters of its fundraising goal to turn these grain silos into something more imaginative with the help of artist Guido van Helten.

Van Helten said in the next few weeks he’s soaking up ideas, people, culture and industry to inspire the final product.

“I’ve always found it better to have a completely clear slate. I have no preconceived ideas or plans. A big part of my process is to come and hear perspectives and to learn about a place before I think about a design,” said van Helten.

He said he’s expecting to start painting in June or July.

There will be a general meeting to learn more about the project will be on April 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Silhouette Room.
