FAO: this year’s world grain harvest could be at a record level

The world’s grain harvest could be a record 2.854 billion tons this year, according to the latest monthly forecast of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The estimated amount is 7.9 million tons more than expected in June and exceeds last year by 3.6 million tons.

The FAO raised its forecast for the world wheat harvest by 0.3 percent to 789 million tons, partly due to the more favorable crop prospects in Asia, so for example a record wheat harvest is expected in Pakistan. Meanwhile, in Russia, less wheat than estimated in June may be harvested this year due to unfavorable weather conditions. According to the Rome-based organization, there may be more rice this year than expected in June. The FAO now expects the amount of harvested rice to be a record 535.1 million tons, 0.9 percent higher than the June forecast.
