Exceptionally warm weather is coming to Corn Belt

Temperatures will be heating up in the Corn Belt heading into August and affecting some of the crops, but ag meteorologist Drew Lerner says “it’s going to be really hard to pull yields down nationwide to the point where we have a raging bull (grain) market or anything like that.”

Lerner says the plains states will be affected the longest by the exceptionally warm temperatures heading into the first week of August.

“South Dakota into Texas will see frequent bouts of heat and occasionally getting into western Iowa and western Missouri.”

He says temperatures will be excessively hot in the Missouri River Valley for 3 to 4 days this week, but after that…

“The ridge of high pressure responsible for all the hot air is going to retrograde or shift to the west. It’s still going to be in the 90s and certainly some upper 80s, so it’s still going to be warm, but it won’t be the 100 degree temperatures that we’ll see for a few days in mid-week.”

Lerner says the Mississippi River Valley into the southeastern United States will experience some above normal temperatures, but they’ll get some rain and thunderstorms with the heat, too.
