Speaker Gerardine Kazarwa emphasized the pivotal role of parliaments in driving sustainable food systems across Africa during the Parliamentary Network Forum at the Africa Food Systems Summit 2024, held in Kigali.
The session, themed “Championing Food Systems through MPs in Africa,” gathered legislators from across the continent to discuss strategies for improving food security and agricultural productivity.
In her address, Speaker Kazarwa showcased Rwanda’s significant strides in agricultural transformation, particularly through innovative digital solutions. She highlighted the ‘Smart Nkunganire System (SNS),’ a digital platform that has revolutionized access to agricultural inputs and services for smallholder farmers in Rwanda.
This innovation has played a key role in boosting agricultural productivity and enhancing food security nationwide.
“The transformation of Africa’s food systems is not just a policy challenge but a moral imperative,” Kazarwa remarked. “It is therefore the responsibility of all of us as Members of Parliament to lead with vision, commitment, and action. In Rwanda, our dedication to utilizing digital tools like the Smart Nkunganire System has not only increased the efficiency of our agricultural sector but has also empowered smallholder farmers, who are the backbone of our food systems.”
The Africa Food Systems Summit 2024 in Kigali serves as a crucial forum for African leaders and stakeholders to share ideas and develop collaborative solutions to the continent’s pressing food security challenges.
Speaker Kazarwa’s insights underscored the importance of parliamentary action in fostering resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems across Africa.
