Ukraine grain exports on upswing

Grain exports for Ukraine for the 2024-25 season (July-June) were 12.5 million tonnes as of Oct. 16, up from 7.7 million tonnes during the same period a year ago, Reuters reported, citing data from the country’s agriculture ministry.

Export volume included 7.1 million tonnes of wheat, 3.5 million tonnes of corn and 1.6 million tonnes of barley. Ukraine, which has been at war since Russia’s February 2022 invasion, has been among the world’s largest exporters for all three commodities.

Ukrainian government and farm associations have agreed to limit wheat exports in the 2024-25 season to 16.2 million tonnes to keep enough supplies for the local population. Traders have used almost 44% of the agreed wheat export quota so far, Reuters reported. Export curbs have not been placed on other commodities.

The ministry said traders had exported about 2 million tonnes of grain so far in October. Exports were 937,000 tonnes over Oct. 1-16 the previous year.

Ukraine’s 2024 combined grain and oilseed crop is expected to fall to 77 million tonnes, including about 54 million tonnes of grain, the ministry previously said. Ukraine’s grain exports in the 2023-24 marketing season rose to about 51 million tonnes from 49.2 million tonnes the previous year.
