SEATINI Uganda officials have called on East African Community (EAC) states to review their national seed policies to recognize and operationalize farm management systems.
Appearing before the Agricultural and Natural Resources committee of the East African Legislative Assembly, programme and communications manager Herbert Kafeero emphasized the need for policies that preserve indigenous seeds, proven to be resilient to the ever-changing environment.
"The policies must address the protection of indigenous seeds, which have been tested and proven to contribute to food sovereignty in Africa," Kafeero stated.
He also stressed the importance of enacting farmers' rights, as the agricultural sector employs the largest percentage of nationals in the region.
However, legislators expressed concerns about conflicting scientific research findings on indigenous seeds.
Despite this, SEATINI Uganda's call to action aims to promote food security, biodiversity, and climate resilience in the region.
