FuFeng USA Inc. is considering a former synthetic ethanol site in the US Midwest for a $750 million corn wet milling plant, the Champaign News-Gazette newspaper reported.
The site under consideration in Tuscola, Illinois, US, was formerly operated as Equistar Chemicals, which manufactured synthetic ethanol. The facility closed in fall of 2021, and the site cleanup process was completed last summer, the newspaper said.
The FuFeng facility would produce feed primarily for poultry and swine and purchase about 25 million bushels of corn per year.
FuFeng USA is a subsidiary of China-based Fufeng Group Ltd., which is a bio-fermentation company that manufactures products for animal nutrition, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, health and wellness, personal care and oil and gas industries.
FuFeng is looking for a more efficient operation, the newspaper said. Right now, it ships corn to China for processing and then brings it back to the United States.
It would like to begin construction on the project this year with completion estimated to take about three years.
