Viterra loaded 71,500 tonnes of wheat bound for end users in the Middle East, the company’s largest shipment since the 2021-22 season, despite a below-average harvest wrapping up in South Australia.
The vessel was loaded at Viterra’s Outer Harbor grain storage and handling terminal in Adelaide in January and equaled the largest to ever be exported from the terminal, Viterra said in its Feb. 4 harvest report.
Derek Robjohns, general manager of supply chain, said the shipment was a welcome achievement for both Viterra and southern Australian growers in what has been a challenging season.
“The South Australian (SA) harvest was overall better than expected with growers producing a high-quality crop despite low rainfall, which shows why SA grain has such a great reputation around the world for its reliable quality,” Robjohns said. “Exporting a large parcel like this demonstrates the continued demand for SA growers’ grain in the Viterra network and the strength of our supply chain, particularly when we use rail to move grain to our deepwater Outer Harbor port.”
As Viterra moved grain to market, farmers delivered 60,000 tonnes to its sites during January, taking total 2024-25 season receivals past 3.3 million tonnes, the company said. Viterra has now loaded over 900,000 tonnes of grain for export this season.
“We have loaded SA grain destined for 15 countries so far, with 430,000 tonnes exported from our Eyre Peninsula ports, 300,000 tonnes from our Adelaide ports and 170,000 from our Yorke Peninsula ports across a total of 24 vessels,” Robjohns said.
