Rwanda Takes Bold Step in Food Security with AGRA Partnership for a Food Innovation Hub

The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rwanda’s Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Innovation (MINICT) to establish the Rwanda Food Innovation Hub, a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing sustainable food systems and boosting agricultural resilience across Africa.

The Food Innovation Hub will empower smallholder farmers, develop inclusive markets and financing solutions, and strengthen agricultural systems to enhance food production, nutrition, and climate change adaptation.

A Strategic Collaboration for Agricultural Transformation

This partnership aligns with Rwanda’s national development priorities, focusing on economic growth and poverty reduction through technology and innovation. It also supports AGRA’s 2022-2030 Strategic Framework, which emphasizes a food systems approach to addressing hunger, nutrition challenges, and climate resilience.

Dr. Agnes Kalibata, President of AGRA, emphasized the organization’s commitment to transforming Africa’s food systems:

“AGRA is committed to catalyzing sustainable food systems across Africa. This collaboration with MINICT will create a vibrant ecosystem for food innovation in Rwanda, with benefits extending to farmers and communities throughout the continent.”

Paula Ingabire, Rwanda’s Minister of ICT, underscored the importance of integrating technology into agricultural development:

Key Areas of Collaboration

The MoU outlines a framework that will position Rwanda as a leading Food Innovation Hub by:

• Encouraging and scaling food systems innovations to achieve sustainable agricultural growth.
• Providing strategic advisory services through AGRA’s participation in the Steering Committee.
• Engaging with national, regional, and global actors to cultivate impactful partnerships.
• Enhancing policy frameworks through MINICT’s leadership in policy design and government coordination.

AGRA’s role will include advising on key strategic initiatives, supporting implementation and capacity-building efforts, and brokering global partnerships to drive investment in food innovation. Meanwhile, MINICT will spearhead policy design, inter-ministerial coordination, and stakeholder engagement.

Ensuring Knowledge Accessibility and Innovation

A crucial element of the partnership is ensuring broad dissemination of knowledge and innovation. The agreement mandates that all research, technologies, and innovations developed through the initiative be made accessible at an affordable cost to the people who need them most in developing countries.
