NEW DELHI, INDIA — India is expected to produce a record amount of rice, wheat, corn (maize) and soybeans in 2024-25, according to a March 10 report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.

Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan attributed the increase to the various schemes the government is providing to farmers to develop the agricultural sector.

Wheat production is estimated at 115.4 million tonnes, up from 113.3 million tonnes in the previous season. India’s wheat prices hit a record high earlier this year because of low supplies and strong demand from flour mills.

So far in 2024-25, the government has purchased 26.6 million tonnes of the 30 million to 32 million tonnes of wheat it has targeted for the year. Stocks were at 14.41 million tonnes at the beginning of March, well above the norm of 7.46 million tonnes.

The nation is also set to produce a record amount of corn at 24.8 million tonnes and rice at 120.7 million tonnes. Soybean production is estimated at a record 15.1 million tonnes.
