Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has asked farmers in the country to do proper food budgeting to ensure that they reserve adequate food before selling their produce.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry Gray Nyandule Phiri said farmers need to reserve enough food crops before they begin to sell so that they should be food secure throughout the year.

He was speaking on Thursday when the Ministry launched a tripartite campaign for manure, irrigation farming and livestock feed preservation at Mpherembe Extension Planning Area (EPA) in Mzimba District.

“Avoid overselling the produce because the same produce that you sell today, you will get it at a relatively higher price during the lean months of January and February,” Phiri said.

He, therefore, asked farmers to properly store their farm produce which they have harvested to achieve food security at household level.

Phiri said it is good to store shelled maize that is well treated by recommended and unexpired storage pesticides and sell excess to Agricultural Development and Marketing Cooperation (ADMARC).

Senior Chief Mpherembe advised farmers to venture into irrigation farming to maximize production.

The launch was held under the theme “Rich earth, rich people; restore our environment for sustainable productivity”.
