The government has paid out Sh1.8b in compensation too farmers who lost their yields mainly due to the dry spell and the floods that came last year under the agriculture insurance arrangement. The technical manager of Agro-insurance Consortium (AIC) Daka Munya said the beneficiaries were mainly from highly prone areas such as the Elgon region, West Nile Karamoja and parts of Western Uganda.
As part of the strategy to ensure safety of farmers during unpredicted disasters, the Government set aside Shs 25b for a team of five years to help in compensating farmers through insurance in case of any losses. The strategy implemented under the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme is aimed at ensuring increased food production.
