PUBLIC offices operating in border posts countrywide must operate for 24 hours every day to ensure smooth movement of goods and products, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment Prof Joseph Buchweishaija has said.

Prof Bushweishaija noted that the government would like to see directive for the 24 hours operation at the border posts is enforced to enhance efficiency in cross-border trade.

And above all, they have to make sure they remain professional all the time and display the best work performance possible to eliminate barriers to trade.

He made the remarks as he introduced the newly appointed Director General of the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) Dr Yusuph Ngenya to the staff of Rusumo, Kabanga and Mutukula borders in Kagera Region over the weekend.

Prof Buchweishaija said the concept of One Stop Centre should be observed fully challenging staff at the border posts to work on it practically and observe business ethics governing cross-border operations.

Citing as an example, he said the tendency of charging double payments for the certification and inspections done by the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) and TBS on the same goods should come to an end but the two should only verify the involved documents and release the consignments at once.

“Observe professionalism and integrity and give no room to any corruption element since that serves as a serious bottleneck in our resolve to reaching the middle income economy,” he said.

On his side, Dr Ngenya warned he would not tolerate to any staff who fail to deliver to the expectations of the public and more importantly fail to move with the current working pace and spirit we are advocating in the country,” he said.

He further added that he was looking forward to the cooperation of the management and staff in ensuring the standards watchdog remains true custodian of quality products for the good of the country’s fast moving economy.

Dr Ngenya was appointed by President John Magufuli in June this year and takes over from Prof Egid Mubofu who was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Dodoma (UDOM).
