AT least 200 youths from three districts of Mvomero, Kilosa and Kilombero in Morogoro region have been trained in modern methods of rice cultivation to help them increase production.

With modern technology, farmers will be able to double their production levels where from one acre a farmer reaps an average of 40 sacks of rice.

The training has been provided through the help of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) to enable youth grab available
opportunities in the agricultural sector.

An officer from FAO, Diomedes Kalisa said they were targeting to help youth in the country to overcome poverty through agricultural activities.

He said that most of youth fail to benefit with agricultural sector because they are practicing business as usual when farming.

“Through the provision of training, we have enabled youth groups to increase production from an average of nine to 40 sacks per acre,” he said.

The officer noted that apart from training farmers they are also committed to helping youth obtain various agricultural equipments.

Margaret Mwakyambo, a project official, said that the government believes that good production is contributed by the use of good technology from agricultural research.

She commended the youth for joining the agricultural sector where modern technology is applied in cultivation.

Godfrey Pascal, a program beneficiary said the group was happy with productivity growth, but the challenge to most of them was to meet the high cost of farm inputs.
