Farmers may soon get relief if government reconsiders the recently imposed 1% withholding tax on agriculture which is said to be taking a toll on Farmers across the country. Speaking during the International Coffee Day celebrations in Mukono on Thursday, Agriculture Minister Vincent Ssempijja said he has received several complaints from farmers that the newly introduced tax is threatening to wipe away their capital.
The minister added that he has already written to the Finance Minister and the Prime Minister about the matter and will soon meet to discuss it, with a view of reducing the tax. We wanted all Ugandans to start contributing to the National Basket starting with just a token but 1% is not a token.
