Tanzania September inflation lowest in East Africa

TANZANIA is having lowest inflation rate compared to some East African countries, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported yesterday.

According to the NBS report, Kenya has the highest inflation rate of 5.7 per cent followed by Uganda 3.7 per cent and Tanzania with the lowest of 3.4 per cent.

In Tanzania, the annual Headline Inflation Rate for the month of September has slightly increased to 3.4 per cent from 3.3 per cent recorded in the previous month explaining a slight increase of the speed of change of commodities price.

On monthly change, the consumer price for the period under review has increased by 0.1 per cent compared to a decrease of 0.4 per cent recorded in August and July.

The overall index has increased to 112.12 in September from 112.01 recorded in August mainly attributed to price increase of non-food items.

Some non-food items that contributed to such increase are namely garments for men by 4.2 per cent, footwear for women by 2.9 per cent, rent by 2.4 per cent, materials for the maintenance and repair of the dwelling by 2.7 per cent, firewood by 6.8 per cent and school books by 1.4 per cent.

The overall index went up to 112.12 in September from 108.48 recorded in September last year. Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for the month of September has further decreased to 2.0 per cent from 2.2 per cent recorded in August.

Annual Inflation Rate for food consumed at home and away from home has also decreased to 3.1 per cent in September, 2018 from 3.2 per cent recorded in August.

However, the 12 month index change for non-food products in September has increased to 4.8 per cent from 4.6 per cent recorded in August.

The Annual Inflation Rate which excludes food and energy for the month of September has increased to 2.2 per cent from 2.0 per cent recorded in August.

In addition, Annual Headline Inflation Rates over the same period range between 5.3 per cent in September and 3.3 per cent recorded in August.
