Dar es Salaam — Maize farmers are feeling the impact of a continuous fall in prices in both the local and international markets.

The prices dropped by at least 10 per cent in four months, according to reports from the ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.

Reports indicate that in Dar es Salaam, the wholesale price of a 100-kilogramme bag of maize fell to Sh37,000 last Friday from Sh43,000 on July 6 and Sh70,000 on May 11, this year.

A survey conducted by The Citizen in various city markets has established that retail prices eased to Sh600 a kilo from Sh1,000 in April, while retail prices of maize flour remained at between Sh900 and Sh1,000.

Data shows that Songea District in Ruvuma Region had the lowest price of Sh20,000 for a 100-kilogram bag of maize while the highest price recorded was Sh54,000 in Geita Region.

The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) monthly economic review for September has shown that wholesale prices for most major food crops were lower in August 2018 than that of the corresponding month in 2017. The review has indicated that wholesale prices for the 100-kilo bag of maize were down by 29.1 per cent to an average price of Sh40,520.1 in August, this year, from Sh57,277.8 recorded on the same month in 2017.
