Farmers Organisation Limited (FOL) has announced the introduction of six new pesticides which has replaced the popular ones called Chlordane, which is no longer on the market, have been approved and certified to deal with the strenuous pest.
The announcement was made on Wednesday during a news conference at the FOL Head Offices in Blantyre.</p>
Among the certified pesticides include Stewards 150 EC, Belt 480 SC, proclaim Fit, Chlorpyrifos 480 EC, Decis Forte, Deltanex 25 EC imported from Europe, United Sates of America, China and India.
FOL national sales and marketing manager Ronald Chilumpha said wthis range of products has been developed so that the smallholder farmers have access to a range of crop protection inputs that will provide excellent efficacy but with minimum toxicity.
He said the products are easy to use as farmers will not require a cup but just to open the vial or sachet and pour into a 16 lt knapsack sprayer or watering can.
This ensures that the farmers arw getting genuine products because there is no decanting or alduteration,”he said.
He said this mono dose packs are now available in Nyonga packs like the one which is popularly used in integrated production system in tobacco.
Chilumpha also said they have registered another product called 2-4D Amine for control of weeds in rice.
He said the product will be on the market in the next few weeks.
All these innovations have been developed in line with our motto called more yield from less land.At the current rate of population growth,we need to better utilize our land to produce enough to feed the growing population, he said.
FOL agronomist and customer relations manager Barney Kamvazina said the organisation is also in a process of registering a maize seed dressing pesticide called Fortenza Duo for control of pests in the early days of planting.
According to Kamvazina, if seed is dressed, there is an increase of up to 23 percent in yields.
