Why Youth Should Focus on Agriculture

Agriculture is a core sector of Uganda’s economy. It employs  about 70% of the population and contributes up o 26% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The sector according to a consultancy firm, Delloitte has a potential to transform Uganda’s economy in general and that of specific sectors such as agro-processing and manufacturing. The Government identifies agriculture as a vital sector capable of reducing poverty and stimulating economic growth , Regarding Vision 2040. Agriculture is one of the key sectors projected to propel the country to a middle-income status. According to Feed the Future Uganda Youth Leadership for Agriculture Activity, currently about 55% of the youth in Uganda are engaged in Agriculture. Howevwer, despite this agriculture has not been treated as a core subject on Uganda’s curriculum. The Economic Policy Research center reports that the youth engagement in agriculture is actually declining amidst rising youth unemployment
