Farmers are being urged to embrace climate smart agriculture to boost agricultural productivity and build resilience to climate change risks for smallholder farmers.

Experts say there is need for improvement of extension services to support farmers, ensure sustainability and that they understand the entire value chain.

Most of Kenya’s agricultural activities are rain-fed and highly susceptible to climate variability.

Farmers are being encouraged to embrace climate smart agriculture in order to combat the worrying effect of climate change on food security.

In Kitui County for instance, the county government has been encouraging farmers to grow green grams since they are drought resistant in a food security campaign dubbed the Ndengu Revolution.

Agricultural experts say it was important for farmers to understand the entire value chain hence underscoring the need for improvement in extension services to support farmers and ensure sustainability of the climate smart agriculture.

The Netherlands Development Organization SNV has been offering Climate Smart Agriculture targeting to increase investments and business growth in climate smart value chains for pulses, oil seeds, potatoes and cereals.
