“If weights of the products are maintained, more customers are attracted, more sales are done, and thereby wealth is created. This helps alleviate poverty,” WMA standards manager Jared Mushi said, when speaking at the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF).
He expressed the regret that despite efforts of the WMA and other regulatory bodies to ensure quality products, some unscrupulous manufactures produced without recourse of the necessary requirements.
He said WMA has a role to protect consumers in trade, health, safety and environment in relation to weights and measurements and protect society from consequences of false measurements in any transaction.
“We remind the general public of the importance of using right weights and measurements as a way to cooperate with authorities to stop these unlawful traits,” she said, adding that stations are required to have right weights and measurements in each stage starting from production, storage, transportation up to the distribution point.
He also called on manufacturers to work closely with WMA before starting production as proper measurements attracts customers.
The manager said that the trade fair provides a good platform for manufacturers and the general public to showcase their products and understand responsibilities of WMA.
He further said that WMA will soon start measuring electric reading meters used by Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) to ensure that there is a fair play between the power utility firm and customers.
WMA communications manager, Irene John commended the government move to empower the authority with ultra-modern facilities that will improve its performance.
WMA as an executive agency was established under Executive Agencies Act No.30 of 1997 as part of the government move to protect consumers through legal metrological control in Tanzania Mainland.
