SEED Malawi has called upon Small and Medium-sized enterprises (SME’s) in the country to adopt and develop sustainable businesses by using clean energy sources.
The Organization’s consultant, Tione Kaonga said that technologies that restrict huge emissions of carbon and that allow regeneration of raw materials are the best in environmental conservation.
He made the sentiments Monday in Lilongwe during SEED Malawi policy briefing to the Media on the progress the organization has made in their promotion for sustainable entrepreneurship among SME’s in the country.
Kaonga said Agenda 2063 that Malawi adopted, could be transformative in creating business environments that recognizes eco-inclusive entrepreneurship as drivers of change in environmental management and building climate change resilience for communities in the country.
This Agenda is an African Union’s strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the continent in the next 50 years.
“As SEED Malawi, we are encouraging the adoption of clean energy in terms of carbon emission reduction and promotion of reusable raw materials hence working with different SME’s across the country in trying to set the agenda of eco-friendly entrepreneurship,” he explained.
Kaonga hinted on promotion of solar energy and also the use of sustainable charcoal production considering that Malawi as a country has a long way to go to shift from biomass and other energy sources hence making sure that people adopt sustainable usage of such sources of energy.
Deputy Director in the Ministry of Trade responsible for SME’s, George Mwase said government through their ministry was currently working towards the promotion of eco- friendly businesses by encouraging the use of environmental friendly materials in the production and packaging of products.
He said Malawi being an agro based country, it was very important to promote enterprises that are eco-friendly in order to create an optimum environment for production.
“It was very important to make entrepreneurs realize the mutual benefit there are in creating eco-friendly businesses”, Mwase said.
Chief Executive Officer for Ziweto Enterprise, a local SME, Byton Simwaka said SME’s are a key aspect in the promotion of climate smart agriculture and business enterprises.
He said it was important for policy makers to engage such groups to know and find ways of filling existing gaps in the promotion of eco-friendly businesses in a quest to making it work in the country.
SEED Malawi was founded in 2002 at the world summit on sustainable development. The organization is currently working with growing enterprises and aspiring entrepreneurs to strategize, optimize and award achievement in eco-inclusive entrepreneurship
