Avocado growing might replace tea and maize farming in Bomet after the newly introduced crop proves profitable.
The crop has gained fame in the county after Kenya exported 26 tonnes worth Sh 4.6 billion between January and March 2021.
Bomet Governor Dr Hillary Barchok said when he witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Biofarms limited and Berur Cooperative Farmers’ Association, the figures served to remind local farmers of the potential the crop had.
Dr Barchok said his administration was working closely with local farmers through provision of technical support in order to maximize production as well as profits from the crop.
Biofarms limited Managing Director Daniel Nzyuko said they will help the farmers raise the quality of the fruits that will fetch between 90 and 100 shillings a kilogram.
Dr Barchok further said that the County Government of Bomet was also in talks with other partners who will help provide both technical as well as marketing support to the farmers.
